More Music:
Here's a list of some of the music I recently acquired. Where do I get all this stuff? I find a lot of free (actually free) music by visiting several of the new music web sites out there. Artists want you to hear their music - If you like it, you'll buy it. The major labels want you to pay for their product - letting you hear it for free is contrary to their business model. Well, guess what? I won't buy it unless I can listen to it first. The major labels are killing themselves with their restrictive distribution and dissemination policies. If you like new music, you can do a google search to find your favorite artists web site, a new music web site, or an archive of free music. Free music is available - Legally! Don't believe the major labels propaganda - Not all free music is illegal. You can legally download music for free. I download music from websites, newsgroups (when I already own rights to the music), and a couple of commercial sources. Here's a listing of some of the music I legally downloaded.

Web site downloads:
* Neighborhood Texture Jam: (10 songs) I downloaded ten songs from five different albums, and added one of their albums to my eMusic.com downloads list. Loopy lyrics, visceral vocals and the passion of Flesheaters. This hard-rocking band has the added benefit of good instrumentals.
* Great Big Huge - Recordings: (8 songs) I downloaded this album? From the archive at Musical Family Tree. An Indiana band (early 2000s) with a sixties sound. Folk rock with electric guitar. They remind me a lot of Velvet Underground. Happy, upbeat, simple lyrics that anyone can sing along with. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything else by this band.

These are just some of the items I added to my music collection during the month of September. Since returning from Japan in 2001, I've been rediscovering my appreciation for music. I really picked it up again in September of 2005. Since then, I've been slowly adding, revising and updating my music collection. With these acquisitions, I've updated my online music listing. If you have a comment or a question regarding my music collection, please don't hesitate to send me an email. robert robsworld org

Movies in the month of September:
Usually, I try to purchase three movies a month. This month was an exception. Given the other expenses of the month - I purchased an iPhone and a copy of iLife '08, I only purchased one movie this month. During September of 2007, I bought a copy of 'The Gamers'. It's a D&D inspired movie. Yes - I'm a total geek, I admit it. This is a fanboy movie. The movie is produced by gamers. Those who play RPGs. Not the online sort. The table-top face-to-face kind that I love. Here is a group of geeks gathered around the DM's screen, rolling dice, chugging soda and cracking inside jokes. The movie moves back and forth between shots of the gamers (gathered around the table), and 'live action' re-enactments of the characters actions (out in the fantasy world). The costumes, props, and production are all low budget, but the writing is top notch, and the jokes are great. I've had many fun hours playing D&D, and I'm not the only one. Here's a group of gamers who finally did what many of us fantasized about. 'Hey we could definitely make a movie out of this adventure'. The adventure in this case is nothing spectacular, nothing extravagant, no epic campaign. It's a standard straight up 'shoot and loot' episode, straight out of anyone's Saturday afternoon campaign. The acting is pretty poor, and the sound work terrible. Despite it's flaws, I couldn't help but love it. If you're a 'Gamer', you'll agree, this movie is awesome!

With this new purchase, I updated my Movies page, and updated (yet again) my movies listing. If you're interested in my 'highly biased' review - you can check out the review for this movie, and many more at my movie reviews page.

Spamalot!
This evening, Kim and I went and saw a musical. Monty Python’s Spamalot tells the legendary tale of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and their quest for the Holy Grail. The live show is lovingly ripped off from the motion picture Monty Python and The Holy Grail, and features chorus lines of dancing divas, hot knights in tights, feisty Frenchman, silly songs and a happy ending! Monty Python’s Spamalot opened in New York and London to rave reviews from audiences and critics alike. The London Sunday Times said Spamalot “raises silliness to an art form - glorious, irresistible silliness!” Winner of the prestigious Tony Award for Best New Musical, Spamalot is written by Eric Idle (Monty Python). Spamalot plays permanently on Broadway (New York), and London. There's also a 90 minute production in Las Vegas. We saw the show in Denver, one of the stops on it's National tour of the U.S.

We got off to a bad start with this night out. We got lost in downtown Denver. It's tough to find your way around downtown Denver when you can't read a map. So we drove around randomly, hoping we'd find the theater, until someone got out and asked for directions, while the other person circled the block. We showed up 30 minutes late, but we were seated promptly. Thankfully they didn't give away our seats. Once we got settled in, we started to have a good time. The show lasted two and a half hours (we saw two hours of the show), and we had a really good time. Laughing, whistling, and singing along. After an hour or so, I'd completely forgotten about that drive through downtown Denver. I'd go back again, if I didn't have to endure that drive... Hopefully our next trip to the Buel theater won't be such an ordeal.

iPhoto updates:
With my recent purchase of iLife '08, I've posted some new photo galleries. They're posted over at my .Mac web site, but you've got to check it out! Created using iPhoto '08, I'm sure you'll enjoy the amazing way that Apple's iPhoto and .Mac service are integrated to bring you stunning photo galleries for the home user. In addition to posting these galleries, I also updated my photos page, and one of the site indexes.

Movies and Music:
My recent purchase of an iPhone, and updates to a couple of pieces of software (DVDPedia and CDPedia), have prompted me to update my Movie and Music listings. Not only did I update these two listings, I also created two new listings (iPhone movies listing, iPhone music listing), which are geared towards the iPhone. These new listings make it easier for iPhone users to browse my Movie and Music listings.

Cold snap:
So fall is officially here. It got so cold the other day (two days in a row), that we actually had to turn on the heat. I guess summer is over. The temperatures are dropping into the 30's and 40's at night. During the day, we're only getting up into the 70's. The next thing you know, I'll be shoveling the driveway!

D&D updates:
We played D&D on the 22nd of September and the updates are in. During our last meeting, the party had to contend with an enraged Zeddishous. After the battle in the big cave ended, he found out about the Fang's demise. He immediately took off towards the wraith room. The party was nearly exhausted, low on hit points, carrying taint, and completely out of 'turn undead'. It took some brute force, and some convincing, but the party averted that disaster, only to run smack dab up against a character killing monster. Be sure to read all about it in the latest journal entry.

The Adventurers journal:
The tale of our adventurers. A series of journal entries from various party members. This document contains details of their encounters. Victory, defeat, desire and glory. Here is the tale of S.C.R.E.W.O.F.F.S., a group of adventurers who set forth from Whillip, seeking fame, fortune and the defeat of evil in these lands. Thanks to a contribution from Lee, I was able to update this session's journal entry. Be sure to read about the party's journey into Firestorm Peak. In addition to Dynnera's entry, Lars has promised an entry from Tanar's point of view. I'll update the journal as soon as that update becomes available.

3rd Edition Campaign:
I updated the next game date (06 Oct 2007) on the campaign page. This is the first stop for information on the campaign that I'm currently running. Here you'll find information regarding our next meeting, some notes, and an index of web pages and documents that are important to our campaign. In addition to updating the next game date, I also corrected a minor formatting error.
<https://www.robsworld.org/3ecampaign.html>

Monsters encountered:
As a result of the meeting on the 22nd of Sep, I added a new entry for the Black Beast of Bedlam. According to Dynnera the beast is a horrid abomination – An Outsider that appears undead due to its use of previous victim remains.  Blob-like body with tentacle/claws reaching out, and through its magical prowess (using the skull remains of its victim) to cast spells.  Only those with good-aligned weapons, and sufficient melee prowess (and luck) can survive.  Too horrible to further describe as I hope to never encounter another one! In addition to this new entry, I also updated the entry for the Blink Dog. The monsters page is a listing of monsters that the party has encountered, read about or heard of.
<https://www.robsworld.org/monsters.html>

Who's Who?
During Saturday's meeting one of the characters died - Duracell is dead! She was slain by the Black Beast of Bedlam. The party is currently on it's way to the Monastery of the Nether Mountains, in the hopes of raising her from the dead. As a result of her death, I had to make some updates to the Who's Who? Page. In addition to the changes precipitated by the Demise of Duracell, I also updated the entry for Fang, and added an entry for Flash. He's listed in the write up for Zeddishous now. The "Who's Who?" is a listing of characters, both player characters and non-player characters.

Our next gaming date is 06 October, 2007. Stay tuned for more adventure; there will be lots of thrills and excitement in the months to come. The parties next big challenge is beating the clock. In this quest there is a time limit that the party must be cognizant of. If they spend too much time fighting beasties, they just might find that they've run out of time to unravel the mysteries of Firestorm Peak. Be sure to follow our adventurers as they search for Tanar's father, and seek out the source of taint inside Firestorm Peak.

Apple's iLife '08:
Recently (18 Sep 2007) I ordered a copy of iLife '08. It arrived on Friday, and I installed the application that afternoon. This new version of iLife is a considerable improvement over iLife '06. Initially, I was planning to wait until I purchased a new computer, before I picked up iLife '08, but my computer purchase has been pushed back a few months, and I've seen some of the iLife '08 output first hand. The newest version of iPhoto has an excellent photo-gallery capability. When combined with your .Mac account, you can upload photos to share them with friends and family on-line. The online gallery is excellent. You can even set it up to all uploads from remote users. You can see my .Mac photo-gallery if you'd like. I uploaded a bunch of photos from my iPhoto, and I'm really happy with the results.

As for iLife '08. Well, I'm very impressed with the offering. It's amazing how much stuff you get for only $79.00! This software application suite includes five premium products, and two free ones. iPhoto, iMovie (a completely new application (using the same name?)), GarageBand, iWeb, iDVD, .Mac web gallery (you need a .Mac account to use this (it's not really an application). In addition to these great applications, you also get the latest copies of iTunes and QuickTime. Oh yeah, one other thing. If you're upgrading from iLife '06, Apple is even making iMovie HD '06 available as a free download. iMovie '08 is a completely new product, and it's not backward compatible with iMovie HD '06. This free download allows you to continue using iMovie HD '06. If you'd like to learn more about the applications included in this new release, head on over to the Apple web site.

FYI: With this release, Apple has increased (at no additional cost!) the storage for .Mac users (that's me). They bumped up the included storage from 1Gb to 10Gb! That's a pretty hefty increase. So much so, as a matter of fact, that I can now use the .Mac account to publish some of my photos. Thank you Apple. I guess I'll keep my .Mac service for another year.

iGotta iPhone!
On the 16th of Sep, 2007, our cell phone contract with Sprint expired. We had already decided that we were not going to renew the Sprint contract, and I really 'wanted' a new iPhone. Well, on the 21st of Sep, 2007, I got what I wanted. Kim and I went to a local Cingular/AT&T store, and signed up for a new cell-phone contract. With the new contract, we ended up getting a more expensive plan than we had under Sprint, but we got more minutes, an unlimited data plan, and text messaging for both phones. They threw in a free phone (they upgraded the free phone to a Nokia 2610 (they were all out of the free model)) with our contract, and we left the store in a good mood. We then proceeded directly to the nearest Apple Store, where we spent way too much money. I got the iPhone (an 8Gb model), and we each picked out a wireless blue-tooth headset for our phones. For the iPhone I picked up a 'Jawbone'. After we left the Apple store, we headed home to play with the new toys. After some initial problems, I was able to activate my iPhone. I had to call an Apple technician in order to get my iPhone activated, but everything worked out in the end. I'm currently learning how to use my new iPhone, and loving all the fantastic features.

Web site downloads:
* Jeff Middleton - Demo Songs: (6 songs) Here's an artist I discovered years ago, by listening to demos off a MacAddict disc (MacAddict was a Mac oriented magazine, now defunct, that used to distribute a CD with the magazine. On the disc were demo songs from emerging artists). Jeff Middleton has a country ethic and blues like rock sound. With ballad like lyrics and great acoustic guitar work, I'm glad I downloaded these 'demo' tracks. Downloaded from the artist's website. Added one of his albums to my eMusic queue.
* Matt Costa - Songs We Sing: (6 songs) A co-worker recommended this artist, and I have to agree with his recommendation. Outstanding acoustic guitar based music, with mostly sad - but sometimes happy, love songs. Costa's stylish vocals switch with the mood of the music, and I like the fresh feel formed with this variation. Downloaded from the artist's website.

iTunes download:
* Hard-Fi - Once Upon a Time In the West: (11 songs) British, post-punk, power-pop. I first discovered this band through Apple's New Music Tuesday podcast. This album tempers their sound a bit. More personal, less dance floor, more introspection. The fine melodies, instrumentals, and pop vocals are all there. While not as good as their first album, this one offers some serious replay contemplation, and a more mature set of musical compositions.

I love iPhoto:
<rave>Recently, Kim and I went on a vacation with her family. During that ten day vacation Kim's nieces (Chantelle and Amber) and I took well over 800 digital photos. I transferred all those photos over to my computer, and spent about two weeks sorting through the photos. Using iPhoto to edit, crop, and arrange the photos was rather easy. After I created a fantastic web page, I decided that I would print the photos. Well, iPhoto doesn't just 'print' the photos, it gives you the power to publish your photos in a fantastic professional format. After another week, I finally finished my composition. I created a photo book, and Apple promised to print it for me. The page layout and design was easy to do, and it looked great. After I arranged all the photos, I went through, added text, adjusted the fonts, and did some tweaking. After everything was ready, I ordered a soft cover print of the photo book. Two hundred and thirty two photos over 66 pages (8.5x11); all for the amazingly low price of $60.00! It's an amazing book. Well worth the money. Everyone who's seen it is amazed at how nice it looks. "There's no way you made that on your computer!" was one of the comments. Well, we did. Apple's iPhoto made it possible. I'm upgrading the software today (21 Sep 2007), and I can only imagine all the great things I'll be able to do with iPhoto '08.</rave>

An ISP that fights spam?
<rave>Recently (18 Sep 2007) I received a couple of email messages from Anthony Edwards, a system administrator for a few different domains (Easynet UK, Sky Broadband, and others?). The email I received from Mr. Edwards, was sent in response to spam that I reported (through SpamCop) recently. Anthony wrote to thank me for reporting the spam sent through his network. This isn't the first time I've received an actual positive response from a spam report, but I report more than a thousand spam messages per month, and I almost never receive thanks, email, or any sort of reply from the ISPs where the spam originated. I was surprised, impressed, and glad to see that someone still cares. Kudos to Anthony Edwards and the companies he works for. Thanks for helping to fight spam. System administrators like Anthony are our front line in the war against spam. If every ISP employed someone with Anthony's attitude, we'd have a lot less spam to sift through in the morning.</rave>

Keeping Viri at bay:
This week (18 Sep 2007), I renewed my Norton AntiVirus subscription. <rant>What a scam! Here's something that people have to pay for continuously. Once a year I plunk down hard earned cash for something - Access to a text file, downloaded on a regular basis. This text file contains descriptions of viruses. None of which affect Macs? Still, I continue to pay for this thing. $14.99 a year. Sure it's found a bunch of trojans, viruses, etc, but none of them have had the potential to infect my Mac!

This year, when I went to re-authorize NAV for another year of virus definitions, I encountered problems. I purchased a subscription key, and tried to use the key, but Norton wouldn't take the key. I emailed customer service, and they suggested that I try a different key (which they sent me). When I tried to do that, Norton was no longer displaying the dialog which would allow me to renew my subscription. I had to write customer service again. This time they suggested that I try to manually update my virus definitions file. I downloaded the manual update program, ran it and encountered the same problem. Norton wouldn't take the key they gave me, so I had to write them back again. This time I was told to wait until my current subscription expired, or Norton prompted me for the key again...

Well, Norton asked me for the key again (on the 19th of Sep, 2007). This time it took the key that I was provided by customer service? What the? Aside from the annual expense/hassle of subscription renewals, I'm also paying for software upgrades; usually one every other year, so that's another $40.00. Lately I've become increasingly frustrated by the way that Norton interferes with the things I want to do. Want to do a backup to my .Mac account? Sorry, can't run a back up, Norton is scanning my .Mac drive for viruses. Can't seem to make it stop, without disabling it. Want to back up my entire hard drive? Sorry, can't do that either. Norton interrupted the back-up when the back-up drive mounted. Can't seem to make that stop either - without disabling Norton...

I'm planning to buy a new computer in the late 2008/early 2009 time frame. Will this new computer (of course it will be a Mac!) have Norton AntiVirus on it? Hell no!

If I had a PC, I would definitely put up with all this expense. I have never, since I've owned computers (Sinclair ZX80, Commodore 128, and Three different Macs), encountered a virus/trojan that could infect my machine. I've had Norton ever since I've owned my G4 (back in 2000), I've run Norton Anti-Virus. I've paid somewhere in excess of $250.00 overt he past seven years, and I don't think it's worth it. Given the built in security features of OS X, and the low profile of the Mac, my odds of actually becoming infected are extremely slim. Combine that with the problems I've been experiencing, and I've got a good reason to stop putting up with it. </rant>

D&D update:
We played D&D on the 8th of September and the updates are in. During the last four meetings, the party continued their exploration of the caverns and catacombs of Firestorm peak. While exploring the passageways, they encountered an immense cavern, seemingly guarded by urquirsh. Upon entering the cavern, they discovered a microcosm of hungry and hostile creatures. Entering this dark realm triggered a series of attacks, as the creatures seek food and territorial protection. This protracted battle carried over into a fourth day of play, but finally ended on the 8th of Sep, 2007. After defeating all of the cave's occupants, Zedd learned of Fang's demise. He immediately took off towards the wraith room. The party is nearly exhausted, low on hit points, carrying taint, and completely out of 'turn undead'. If Zedd attacks the wraiths now, it'll be a very dangerous encounter. Here is a map marking the current location of the party members. As midnight brought an end to our gaming session, the party is left in the midst of a very dangerous situation. Don't miss our next meeting. It could prove very deadly.

Software favorites:
One of my favorite pieces of software recently released an update. GraphicConverter moves ever forward. One more steps towards perfection. Another product that's always getting better. This release marks the incremental advance of beta releases. Oddly enough, this beta update didn't include a version increment. Here's the official 6.0.1b1 release. This beta release contained more bug fixes, updates and new features than I was expecting.

GraphicConverter:
The developer of this fantastic application released a new beta version (6.0.2b0), in the past few days. GraphicConverter is an image converter and editor. A fantastic piece of shareware that is well worth the price ($34.95). I use it to convert image formats into web standard formats, to create and edit image maps and other graphics. I've been singing GC's praises for many years now, and I'm not sure I would do without it. The best part about GC is it's author. Thorsten Lemke is completely committed to his customer base. Constantly and Continuously responding to customer recommendations and bug reports. GC is a dynamic, evolving, application. Always on the cutting edge, an absolute must in any web developers tool box. At a fraction of PhotoShop's cost, this photo editor puts a huge wrench in your toolbox.

Music collection:
Here's a list of some of the music I recently acquired. Where do I get all this stuff? I find a lot of free (actually free) music by visiting several of the new music web sites out there. Artists want you to hear their music - If you like it, you'll buy it. The major labels want you to pay for their product (they don't care if you've heard, hear, or care for the music) - letting you hear it for free is contrary to their business model.

* Talley Lambert - The Red Line of Hydrogen: (10 songs) A new artist (to me), discovered using a new service. Something called Jamendo.com. I had to download this completely free album from the artists website. Jamendo's peer-to-peer download model (using bit torrent), doesn't work so well. Here's a Seattle-based singer-songwritter who's soul is soundly based in a folk-acoustic groove. With some excellent guitar work, and mournful lyrics, this album - made back in 1997, demonstrates a rather mature sound for a high school kid. I can only imagine how he's improved since then. Free download, licensed under Creative Commons license.
* pornophonique - 8-bit lagerfeueur: (8 songs) A new artist (to me), discovered using a new service. Something called Jamendo.com. I had to download this completely free album from the artists website. Jamendo's peer-to-peer download model (using bit torrent), doesn't work so well. 8-bit is the genre, it's the sound, that harkens back to my days at the arcades in my home-town. Electronic, dance, with some blips and bleeps thrown in for good measure. The vocals are reminiscent of Ultravox or Pseudo-Echo. The music is exhilarating, and the lyrics deeply emotive in couched terms ripped from the local video parlor. Deeper and instrumentally more complex than I would have suspected. I was also surprised to find that each track had it's own cover art. I even created a little pdf document - featuring the cover art - to stick in my iTunes collection. Free download, licensed under Creative Commons license.
* Josh Woodward - Not quite connected: (11 songs) A new artist (to me), discovered using a new service. Something called Jamendo.com. Downloaded via bit-torrent. This artist has decided to make two albums available for free. One is primarily acoustic folk (Not Quite Connected), while the other (Dirty Wings) contains a more traditional rock sound and sentiment. An excellent mix of soundly constructed tracks well worth listening to. I haven't quite decided which I like better. Free download, licensed under Creative Commons license.
* Josh Woodward - Dirty Wings: (11 songs) A new artist (to me), discovered using a new service. Due to difficulties with Jamendo's bit-torrent download method, I had to download this album directly from the artists website.
* Slim - Interstate Medicine: (13 songs) I'm pretty sure that I've heard of 'Slim' before, although the name is a bit ambiguous. Perhaps I'm recalling a different 'Slim'. In either case here's another artist that I discovered over at Jamendo.com. Here's an American band from Oakland, CA. Playing guitar based rock/pop, the sound has Americana/country and hard rocking roots. The vocals are a commanding baritone, the lyrics are ballad like, and the instrumentals commanding rock/pop, driven forward by guitars. The sound reminds me of Ryan Adams crossed with Elvis Costello. Free download, licensed under Creative Commons license.
* Staggered Crossing - Burgundy & Blue: (12 songs) Another new talent (for me), discovered by listening to the completely free tracks available at Jamendo.com, my new favorite music site. If only the downloads weren't bit-torrents. Here's a Canadian (Toronto) band sometimes referred to as 'StagX'. Mixing rock, blues, a little pop, and some country together, they've discovered a groove that's refreshing and exhilarating The instrumentals are very good, and some of the licks stand out from the rest of the crowd. It's these differences that make them better than many bands with a similar sound. Free download, licensed under Creative Commons license.

These recent downloads all resulted from my discovery of a new website. Jamendo.com. This website features free downloads from primarily unsigned, new bands interested in reaching an audience of real people, not the suits and bankrolls of a music label. While I discovered a lot of great bands in my first visit, I've barely scratched the surface, and none of these bands are available on eMusic.com. Hopefully our interest will help these bands.

Cold Snap:
So here we are; September, 2007, and the dog days of summer are over. As we approach Autumn, the days are cooler, and the nights are getting chilly. During the second week of August, we saw temperatures dip into the 60's and 70's during the day. At night the temperatures got even lower, dropping down into the low 40's. We haven't had to turn the heat on yet, but it's only a matter of time. The air conditioner is still running, but it isn't on all the time. I've stopped wearing shorts, and we haven't seen the 90's at all this month. Things are definitely cooling down.

Software favorites:
Two of my favorite pieces of software recently released updates. GraphicConverter moves ever forward. One more steps towards perfection. Another product that's always getting better. This release marks the release of a new full version of the application. This release contained four new features, a dozen updated features, and more than twenty bug fixes. In addition to the GC update, the makers of Transmit released an update with more than a dozen updates and bug fixes.

GraphicConverter:
The developer of this fantastic application released a new full version (6.0.1), in the past few days.

Transmit:
An FTP tool that does it all. Anyone who publishes web pages eventually needs a way to upload their pages to a web site. I've found that stand alone FTP tools are the best for this task. Transmit has a clean and easy to use interface, and some really nifty features, like the ability to resume a transfer that's been interrupted, site synchronization capabilities, iDisk integration (It's way faster than the finder!), drag-to-dock sending, column views, a built in text editor, and secure ftp transfer (in various different flavors) capability. The most recent update moves this software up to version 3.6.1.

Cell phone hell:
Back in October of 2004, I vowed not to renew our wireless contract with Sprint. Well, the time has come. In September of this year (2007), our contract with Sprint expires. Good riddance. Kim and I were subjected to Sprint's horrible customer service, unfathomable billing, hidden charges, and unusable features ever since we first started using them. When I called to inquire about cancellation, I was put on hold for fifteen minutes. Then I was subjected to a lengthy 'we really want to keep you' pitch. I had to tell them several times that I was switching. Telling them that I was planning to purchase an iPhone probably didn't help. They tried to tell me that their phones were superior! Ha! We're tired of Sprint. It's time to try something new. Hopefully, the service at AT&T won't be as bad as the service at Sprint. I know I'm going to be socked for the iPhone purchase, activation, and plan, but I can't imagine that things will be worse than they were with Sprint. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get a corporate discount with the iPhone on my plan. By the end of the month, I should have my iPhone!

Thanks to a contribution from Mark, I was able to update this session's journal entry. Be sure to read about the party's journey into Firestorm Peak.

Where's Fang!?
The big question that was haunting Zeddishous. Ever since he disappeared, back on the 28th of July, the party has been in the dark regarding the fate of Fang. With Duracell's recent revelation, Zeddishous has set off in search of Fang's body. With vengeance on his mind, the party is in a very precarious position. An encounter with wraiths could prove very costly for the party. Here's a map and recap regarding the current situation.

3rd Edition Campaign:
I updated the next game date (22 Sep 2007) on the campaign page. This is the first stop for information on the campaign that I'm currently running. Here you'll find information regarding our next meeting, some notes, and an index of web pages and documents that are important to our campaign.

Character update:
Recently, we've taken to commissioning some original artwork from a fan of our campaign. Richard Tran is a freelance artist who lives in the Denver area. Richard's recent illustration of Tanar went over really well, and Mark was so impressed that he had Richard produce a new illustration for his character. Mark wasn't particularly happy with the 'Hero Machine' rendering of Tanar, and the Wizards illustration wasn't a close enough match to that of Solmar. While the Hero Machine illustrations are nice, they're no match for a well done original illustration. After a bit of descriptive work, Richard set to work on the new illustration. After a short wait, Mark and I are now pleased to present the new Solmar illustration. Don't stop now, be sure to check it out - It's just a short click away, I know you're dying to see it, so don't delay... The "Who's Who?" is a listing of characters, both player characters and non-player characters.

Our next gaming date is 22 September, 2007.

Music collection:
Here's a list of some of the music I recently acquired. Where do I get all this stuff? I find a lot of free (actually free) music by visiting several of the new music web sites out there. Artists want you to hear their music - If you like it, you'll buy it. Here's a listing of some of the music I legally downloaded.

eMusic downloads:
* Westbound Train - Transitions: (15+1 songs) Ska - Boston style. An American Ska band that mixes some jazz, soul, funk, R&B and soulful vocals to create something special. Discovered via 3hive.com. I downloaded a single earlier this year. Liked it so much I decided to buy the whole album.
* Great Lakes Myth Society - Great Lakes Myth Society: (13+2 songs) Discovered at 3hive.com. A folk rock band based in Michigan. The surprising thing is the vocals. Is the lead singer from Ireland? I don't think so, but the accent does remind me of the folks back home (Northern Wisconsin, near the U.P. border). Fantastic instrumentals, and powerful, mythic lyrics that brought me back to the U.P. I downloaded a couple of singles earlier this year. I enjoyed those cuts so much that I decided to purchase the entire album.
* The Fall - Real New Fall LP: (14 songs) A favorite band, rediscovered with the help of Troy's podcast. This particular album doesn't start out very well, but it gets much better in the second half. This album spans a large range of styles, and I can't wait to listen, again, and again and again. The Fall is one of those 70's punk/post-punk alternative bands that didn't fit in anyone's specific groove/genre. Thankfully, they failed to pin down such a silly title.
* Sugarcult - Lights Out: (11+1 songs) American rockers from California. This album features a fantastic line-up of power pop, tinged with a bit of cynicism and defiance. Great instrumentals and catchy lyrics, hammer out an energetic up tempo torrent of terrific rock steady beats. Turn it up! Here's another example of 'free track becomes album purchase'. Several months ago, I downloaded a free track (Los Angeles) from iTunes. Now I'm back buying the entire album on eMusic.
* Extra Blue Kind - Cobat Vixen EP: (3 songs) This short EP contains three tracks from a band with more energy than a double-shot of Red Bull. This is my second selection from this Indiana band's collection. This EP came out before 'The Tide and the Undertow'. It's not quite as polished, but the promise shines through brightly. Clean instrumentals and driven vocals. I first discovered this band while checking out a fantastic music website - Musical Family Tree. Fresh alternative tracks, with an amazing amount of variety.
* Mason Jennings - Use Your Voice: (10 songs) Alt-Country/Folk Rock. I first discovered Mason Jennings by listening to an eMusic sample. This is my second selection from his line-up. Raw and honest sentiment lies buried deep in this acoustic folk offering.
* Craving - February: (10 songs) Low powered rock with plenty of thoughtful lyrics. Slow-core rock with plenty of promise. Discovered by listening to an eMusic recommendation.
* Loudon Wainwright III - Strange Weirdos, Music from and inspired by the film Knocked Up: (14 songs) A folk/rock musician since the late 60's, this man's lyrics contain decades of insight and heartfelt feeling. The instrumentals are excellent. Melodic, well paced, perfectly performed, they accompany the vocals splendidly. This album is the lyrics version of the Knocked Up soundtrack.

Web site download:
* A. A. Bondy - American Hearts: (3 songs) Here are three songs. Two from 3hive.com, and one from the artists MySpace website. Folk, blues, alt-country - Americana. Well crafted debut effort. Not overloaded with overbearing instrumentals.

Die spammer, die!
Beginning on the 4th of September, a spammer launched a spew campaign with my email address in the spam's Reply-To: address field. As a result of his forgery, I received an auto-generatedblow-back message. This server generated messages was sent to me in response to spam sent to some unsuspecting internet user. I warned the system administrator off of auto-responders, but I doubt that they'll listen. Hopefully, there won't be any measurable effects on my domain or its standing. I haven't been black listed yet, not that I know of anyway. Oh how I hate spammers!

The 4th Edition of D&D:
It was bound to happen sooner or latter. Wizards of the Coast - The company that produces my favorite game, announced (on the 16th of August, 2007) the pending release of version 4.0 of the game. The company that owns D&D is best known for their Collectible Card Game - Magic The Gathering. With this release, they've proven their true ethos. Profit over purist. Recently, I had the time to view a bunch of 4.0 videos on YouTube. In viewing the videos, it became clear to me that they've decided to go with a monthly subscription model for their online tools. While many of the tools look interesting (the digital gaming table looks awesome), they won't be offering stand-alone downloadable versions of these tools. Instead, gamers will be forced to pay a monthly subscription fee in order to use these tools. I don't like this decision. I think it stinks. If I pay for something, I want to own it! Some small amount of good news. With all these new online tools, you still won't 'need' a computer to play the game. I also learned that there won't be a 3.0 - 4.0 conversion document. That sucks! The absolute worst thing I heard while watching these videos, was a comment from one of the developers. He said something like. 'The Book of Nine Swords was something of a preview to the 4th edition.' If the 4th edition is anything like that book (I own it), then it's going to suck big time. That book introduced a group of incredibly overpowered characters with little in way of story. The rules introduced in that book were difficult to understand, very complex and overly ornate. I guess if you had a computer to manage your character, you wouldn't have such a hard time managing such a character.

An entirely new version of D&D means that my $1,875.00 plus collection of 3.0/3.5 books is obsolete. A hefty exercise in planned obsolescence. There's nothing wrong with these books, but Wizards of the Coast has decided that I need to buy all new books in order to continue playing the 'official' version of my favorite game. I don't like it. What am I going to do? I'm not quite sure. I haven't made a firm decision yet, but I'm leaning towards - Screw that! For now, we'll continue to play 3.5.

Spammers forge email dates:
A distressing development in my fight against spam. The service that I use to report spam, will not accept reports on spam that is more than 72 hours old. Well, on the 4th of September, I received several spam messages with 'received' dates that were four or more days old. When I attempted to report the spam, SpamCop reject the reports. That's not good. SpamCop reads the most recent date from the email. That date is stamped by my ISP (I wish I could remember what service these arrived through), and SpamCop uses this most recent date in order to determine whether the email is more than 72 hours old. Sometimes an ISP simply copies the date from other parts of the header. I certainly hope that none of my ISPs are doing that. There's more than one date in the header of an email message, and I know that it is possible to intentionally change the date stamp on an outgoing email. Thankfully, I only encountered this phenomenon on one day.

Greylisting to fight spammers:
Today (4 sep 2007) I started using a new technique to fight spam. SpamCop now offers greylisting to it's email members. What's greylisting? Well, let's start by defining a white list and a black list. A whitelist would be a list of email addresses that automatically gets through a spam filter. Once a spammer figures out a 'whitelist' address, he/she will use it in order to bypass any filtering efforts. This is why you often get spam from yourself. A blacklist is a list of IP address (or email addresses) that are not permitted to send you email. They're automatically blocked. Spammers send from multiple IP addresses and forged From: addresses in order to avoid blacklisting. A greylist is somewhere in between. It treats all email as suspicious. When an email arrives at an email server using greylisting, the server checks to see if the sender (IP address) is known. If it isn't, the email gets delayed with a 'Try again later' message. It isn't rejected, and it isn't delivered. It's left in limbo, waiting for a certain period of time. Most legitimate servers will attempt to re-deliver the email after a specified re-try time. Spammer operated email servers, on the other hand, typically shut down after they send their spew. They don't bother checking for delivery status, and they don't like to stay on for too long (someone might do a trace route). As a result legitimate email will get delivered late, and spam will simply never get delivered. Granted, this will only affect email delivered by way of my spamcop account, but the vast majority of my email makes it's way through spamcop, so this should have a big effect on the volume of spam I'm receiving.

Fighting Spam:
<rant>Too good to be true. Back in November of 2006, I signed up for a new email service. A free 'Challenge Response' email address, where spammers have to pay money in order to send me email! I could actually make money off spammers - Imagine that! By publicly disclosing the associated email address (as of 21 Dec 2006), I was fairly certain that the email address would get scraped by spambots — and it did. By the end of April, 2007, I was receiving an average of 90 messages a month. As I indicated back in November of 2006...

Only time will tell how effective this approach to spam reduction will be. The most favorable outcome would be revenue for me. The worst? Well, if spammers manage to find a way around the CR mechanism, I can always disable/delete my account. As long as the service is free to me, I can't really complain.

Well, guess what? Too good to be true. That's the end result of this adventure. While I was under the impression that spammers couldn't use this email address without paying, the truth of the matter is - Spammers were able to send me their messages without paying anything. Boxbe collected all the spew sent my way, dumped it into a "Here's the crap you received" bin, and then sent me an email indicating that I had received email. I kept going back to this garbage heap on a regular basis, sifting through it, hoping I'd find a legitimate email. Hoping I might even find that a spammer would pay to have his messages white listed.

I was deluded. Boxbe didn't reject unpaid senders, they simply collected all the spew, while asking me to 'check it out' - 'see if you wanna keep any of it'. The challenge response messages sent to the spammers never reached the spammers. Those messages were likely sent to the 'From', 'Reply-To' or 'Return-Path' address listed on the spam. As I'm keenly aware, that address is usually (99.99999999% of the time) forged. In many cases, the address is that of an innocent victim. Someone that the spammer has targeted for reprisals, or it might be the email address of someone who's computer has been compromised by a spammer. In either case. The advertisers/spammers never saw the challenge response message. If they did, do you think that they would actually pay to send me email? I don't think so!.

Back in April of 2007, I officially requested that my boxbe.com address/account be deleted. I won't be using it anymore. It's a pipe dream, spammers (or legitimate advertisers) aren't going to pay to send me email, and the challenge response messages are only making this problem worse. So much for that idea. As a result of this recent development, I took the opportunity to update my Feedback page; removing the boxbe.com address and cleaning up some bloated code. I had to write back two more times, and still they didn't terminate my account. Finally, in June of 2007, I began reporting the monthly 'status' message as spam. Once I started reporting their email as spam they deleted my account. This month (September of 2007), I finally deleted my boxbe.com address. I haven't 'received' any email from them in over a month. </rant>

If you ever need any help figuring out a problem involving unsolicited email, or help hunting down a spammer, don't hesitate to ask for my help. I'm willing and eager to help. Just drop me an email. I'd put the email address here, but this email message is also posted online, where spammers could scrape the email off the web page. Damn those spammers!
