Kevin and Eileen: Robert' sister - Eileen, and her husband - Kevin, joined us for the
week. It sure was nice to see them again.
Welcome to the North Woods: Here we are, up North. Celebrating another round of
Kim's birthday. Kim and I stayed with my mom from 26 - 30 July. First night up, we
went out. Here we are having dinner at "Rene's Dining Room", formerly known/still
known to most - as Popp's Resort.
Fine dining: Let's see... I'll have the 'Frog Legs'. Something you just can't get in
Denver. Yummy, crispy, tasty - Frog legs!
Put another log on the fire: Robert's mom has a big firepit in the back yard. Here Eileen
and Brook pick out some logs to keep the fire going. There's nothing like sitting around
the campfire, relaxing with a drink at the end of the day.
Mom's kitchen: Everything is within reach in mom's kitchen. Here's a photo of the place
up north. Mom lives in the 'North Woods' of Wisconsin. A secluded spot, away from the
hub-bub of the big city. It's really remote, but it sure is nice.
Pretty flowers: I can't remember the precise name of this plant. It's some member of
the rose family. Rob Garrity (or was it someone else in his family?) gave it to my mom a
little over a year ago. I'm glad it survived the first year. It sure looks nice.
The campfire: Here's a shot of the campfire at night. With tiki-torches to keep the
mosquitos away, it's actually a nice spot to spend the evening. I'm glad we chose July as
the time to visit. It sure was nice in the evenings.
Rafters: On the 29th of July, we went rafting on the Peshtigo. Here are 'Riley, Brooke
and Kim'. Unfortunately, due to the low water level on the river, the locals (our guide)
are calling it the 'Pushtogo' river. We had a good time, but it could have been much,
much better. If there had been more water.
Woodpecker's home: Here is one of the big old oak trees in mom's yard. In this one
there's a woodpeckers nest. If you look closely, you can see the juvenile woodpecker's
head (it's a bright red spot in the green).
Relaxation - Straight ahead: Half Moon Lake Rd. Looking West. Here's where the road
ends. It's a dead end for civilization (unless you've got satellite tv), a place where
relaxation lives, the place where my mom lives.
Carriage house: We stayed in the 'Carriage House' (aka garage) while we were here.
Why? Well, our inflatable queen size bed is bigger than that old twin in Dad's room. Plus
there's a little more privacy out here. If it hadn't been so cold, it would have been great.
Back woods salon: Here's another view of the campfire. It's a bit more accommodating
than most campground fire pits, but this one has had some time to evolve. There's
some work waiting on the back of that pickup... Time to split some wood for the fire.
The fire pit is the salon of the north woods. Many great discussions originate around this
pit.
Taking a break: Here are Kim, Eileen and Kevin. Taking another break. In the middle of
the day? Unfortunately, Eileen and Kevin had to go back to Valders, WI on the 29th.
Kim and I get another day in relaxation land.
Evening approaches: The only 'bad' weather we encountered during our stay in the
North Woods. On the 29th of July it threatened rain. We got a few sprinkles, but it really
didn't amount to much more than some cloudy conditions.
Firepit Queen: Now that Eileen and Kevin are gone, Kim's in charge of the fire. Here we
can see her taking her job very seriously. This fire must last well into the night... If it
doesn't the mosquitos will carry us away.
Mom and Me: Our departure on the 30th was a bit sad. I'd rather stay and play a round
of dominoes, but we've got other places to go, more people to see, and a vacation quest
to complete. Bye Mom!
Saying our goodbyes: Kats and Kim saying goodbye on the 30th of July. We've still go
five more days of vacation left. Too bad it can't last a little longer. See you soon.
